IPL Q & A

What is IPL?

IPL is a laser treatment that uses a variety of wavelengths to treat skin concerns effectively, without surgery or injections.

At Metroplex Dermatology, Dr. Hensley's team uses a laser resurfacing treatment that works just like IPL when it comes to refining your skin. During treatment, Dr. Hensley's team glides the laser device smoothly over your skin as it delivers healing energy in two-second pulses.

The treatment is non-invasive and effective for most skin types and tones.

Why should I consider IPL?

Dr. Hensley and his team's top priority is to provide patients with safe and effective treatments. The advanced laser therapy offered by Metroplex Dermatology can help with medical skin conditions and cosmetic goals.

IPL effectively resolves a number of common skin concerns, such as:

  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Rosacea
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun damage
  • Acne scars and some active outbreaks
  • Vascular lesions (visible blood vessels)
  • Freckles and age spots
  • Removal of birthmarks
  • Unwanted hair

Following a thorough review of your skin complaints, health, and goals, Dr. Hensley's team creates a customized IPL treatment plan for you.

When will I see the benefits of IPL treatment?

The benefits of IPL therapy can be seen after just one session, but Dr. Hensley's team usually recommends a series to help you get the smooth, flawless skin you desire. In most cases, patients do best with 3-6 treatments scheduled about one month apart.

As time progresses and the benefits of the therapy compound, your skin’s appearance improves. This is because the light energy stimulates the development of more collagen and elastin, skin-strengthening compounds that boost skin integrity and smoothness.

Once you’ve completed your initial series of IPL sessions, Dr. Hensley's team may recommend yearly maintenance treatments to maintain your enhanced complexion.

Does IPL treatment hurt and do I need to schedule downtime?

Prior to applying the laser energy, Dr. Hensley's team does apply a topical numbing cream to ease sensation. The therapy itself causes a slight stinging, much like the feel of a rubber band snapping against the skin.

Following treatment, you don’t have to schedule downtime but should avoid direct sun exposure, hot baths and saunas, swimming, and exfoliants or acne treatments.
