Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is a popular cosmetic injection that minimizes the appearance of moderate-to-severe lines and wrinkles located between your eyebrows, along your forehead, and around the outer corner of your eyes.

By removing the wrinkles of time and making small improvements to your otherwise perfect face, Botox brightens your attitude and your outlook.

In addition to lines and wrinkles, Metroplex Dermatology uses Botox injections to treat patients with excessive underarm sweating, a condition known as hyperhidrosis.

How does Botox work?

Botox is a specially formulated injection that contains a purified neurotoxic protein. When injected into targeted areas of your face, the purified protein relaxes the muscle and reduces muscle movement.

Stopping muscle activity halts the folding of your skin that creates lines and wrinkles. Within a few days of inactivity, your skin smooths itself out, reducing the appearance of your frown lines and facial wrinkles.

What happens during Botox injections?

Dr. Hensley's team performs your Botox injections at the office. The injections take only a few minutes and cause little to no pain. For those sensitive to pain, Metroplex Dermatology's team may apply a topical anesthetic prior to your injections to minimize discomfort.

During your Botox injections, Dr. Hensley's team administers small amounts of the medication into specific areas of your skin to get the desired results.

What can I expect after Botox injections?

There’s no downtime following Botox injections, but you may experience some minor swelling, redness, or bruising around the injection site. Dr. Hensley's team recommends taking acetaminophen or using ice packs to reduce swelling and discomfort.

These side effects are temporary and resolve within a few hours. To reduce the risk of bruising, Dr. Hensley's team suggests you delay any strenuous physical activity for at least two hours following your injections.

You should notice an improvement in your look within 24-48 hours and continued improvements over the next seven days. Botox injections are temporary, and the results last 3-5 months.

Once you notice a return of your lines and wrinkles, Dr. Hensley's team recommends you schedule your next Botox session. Regular Botox injections not only help you maintain your youthful look but may also prevent new wrinkles from forming.
